Replacing windows in 2026: price per window and what you save

Old windows are most noticeable in February, when cold air trickles down the frame and the electricity bill peaks. The question is rarely whether to replace them, but when it makes financial sense.

This guide covers the 2026 price per window in Sweden, the energy saving in kronor, and how to tell whether your windows are worth renovating instead.

Price per window in 2026

A triple-glazed timber or timber-aluminium window costs 4,500 to 9,000 SEK in materials for a standard size, and fitting runs 2,500 to 4,500 SEK per window including removal, insulating the reveal, sealing and new linings.

Budget 8,000 to 13,000 SEK per window in total, with a lower unit price if you replace many at once since set-up costs are shared.

What you save in energy

A 1970s double-glazed window typically has a U-value near 2.8, while a modern triple-glazed unit reaches 0.9 or lower. Across a house with 15 windows that often means 3,000 to 7,000 kWh a year.

At around 1.80 SEK per kWh that is 5,000 to 12,000 SEK annually, giving a payback of 12 to 20 years. That is why window replacement pairs well with a facade repaint or insulation job you were doing anyway.

Renovate instead of replace

If you have linseed-painted timber windows from before the 1960s, the timber is often slow-grown heart pine of a quality no longer sold. Those windows are almost always worth restoring: scrape, re-putty, paint with linseed oil paint and add internal secondary glazing.

Secondary glazing or an energy cassette brings the U-value to around 1.3 at a fraction of the cost of a new window, while keeping the character of the house. If the frame is rotten at the bottom, or it is 1980s laminated timber, replacement is usually the right call.

ROT and practical details

Fitting labour qualifies for the 30 percent ROT deduction in a house you own, which on 15 windows can be 15,000 to 20,000 SEK back. Materials do not qualify.

Inside a detailed development plan area, replacing windows can require a permit if the appearance changes, for example different glazing bars or colour. In a co-op you always need board approval, because the facade belongs to the association.
