ROT deduction for painting: what qualifies and how to claim in 2026
How the ROT deduction works for painting in Sweden 2026: eligibility, amounts, what counts and what Skatteverket requires on the invoice.

The ROT deduction is the easiest way to lower the cost of painting, a 30% discount on labour is deducted directly from the invoice by the firm. But the rules are strict and mistakes lead to rejected claims from Skatteverket.
What qualifies for ROT on painting?
- Interior repainting, walls, ceilings, trim, doors.
- Exterior repainting, facade, panel, windows, balcony.
- Filling and priming as part of the painting job.
- Wallpapering (labour, not the wallpaper).
- Wallpaper removal ahead of repainting.
What does NOT qualify?
- Materials, paint, wallpaper, filler, tape.
- Call-out fee, billed separately.
- New construction, only maintenance of existing.
- Work on rental apartments, only villa, townhouse and condo.
- Homes younger than 5 years, not eligible.
Amounts and caps 2026
You get 30% off the labour cost, up to 50,000 SEK per person per year. Two co-owners of a home can together get 100,000 SEK per year.
The cap is shared with the RUT deduction for household services (cleaning, moving, gardening etc.), check what you've already used this year before booking bigger jobs.
How the firm applies the deduction
The firm deducts ROT directly from the invoice and then claims reimbursement from Skatteverket. You don't need to submit any claim yourself.
The requirement is that the invoice is itemized, labour separated from materials, and that the firm has a valid F-skatt certificate. Every painter on HemmaPro is verified.
