How to hire a painter in Sweden: checklist and red flags 2026

Choosing the right painter is more about filtering out bad firms than finding "the best one". Most complaints come from customers who skipped the most basic checks.

Here's a practical checklist and the red flags that reveal firms you should avoid.

Step 1: Verify the firm

• F-skatt certificate, check on Skatteverket.se before booking.
• Liability insurance, ask for proof, minimum 10 million SEK cover.
• References, ask for 2–3 customers you can call.
• Trade association membership (Måleriföretagen) is a plus.
• On HemmaPro every painter is verified before they can send quotes.

Step 2: Get at least 3 quotes

The gap between the lowest and highest bid for the same job is often 30–50%. With only one quote you have no reference point.

Make sure all quotes are on the same basis: same number of coats, same paint quality, same scope. Otherwise you're comparing apples and pears.

Step 3: Read the quote carefully

• Fixed price or time & materials? Always fixed price if possible.
• What's included in materials? Which paint, which brand?
• Call-out and final cleaning, included or separate?
• Floor and furniture protection, who's responsible?
• Timeline, start and end date, liability for delays.
• Payment terms, pay AFTER final inspection, not before.

Red flags, avoid these firms

• Demands a large deposit (more than 20%) before work starts.
• Cash-only payment, means no ROT, no accountability.
• Refuses a written quote, everything must be in writing.
• Offers ROT without F-skatt, illegal.
• No references or vague answers when you ask.
• Prices far below market, often leads to add-on invoices.

Step 4: The contract

A good contract contains: both parties' names, the job address, detailed work description, material specification, price (incl. VAT and ROT), payment plan, timeline, warranty and liability insurance.

Skatteverket requires a signed contract if the ROT job exceeds 25,000 SEK.

Step 5: Final inspection

Before paying the final invoice, walk the job with the painter. Note any defects in writing and hold back 10% of the payment until they are fixed.
