A regular weekly babysitter: building a schedule that lasts

One-off evenings solve a dinner. A fixed weekly schedule solves the week. The difference between families who find childcare easy and families who find it exhausting is almost always continuity.

Here is how to set up a recurring arrangement that actually survives a full term.

Common arrangements

Two afternoons a week, roughly 3–6 pm, covering preschool pickup and dinner, is the most common setup. Next most common is one fixed weekday evening plus every other Saturday.

Families on shift work often plan a rolling two-week schedule and confirm it in the app, which removes the weekly renegotiation entirely.

What it costs per month

Six hours a week at 200 SEK is 1,200 SEK weekly, around 5,200 SEK a month before RUT, so roughly 2,600 SEK after the deduction. Ten hours a week lands near 4,300 SEK a month after RUT.

Remember the RUT cap of 75,000 SEK per adult per year, shared with cleaning, gardening and moving. A heavy childcare schedule can consume it, so plan it alongside your other home services.

How to keep the same sitter

Book the whole term at once rather than week by week. Pay on time. Be precise about the end time and stick to it, repeated overruns are the most common reason sitters decline to renew.

Raise the hourly rate by 5–10% after six months with the same person. That costs far less than onboarding someone new and signals that you value the relationship.

Illness, holidays and a backup plan

Agree in advance what happens when the sitter is ill. The strongest setup is a second sitter who has already done at least one session with you, so the children recognise them.

Sportlov, Easter break and autumn half-term bring higher daytime demand. Book holiday weeks at least a month ahead, particularly in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö.
