Babysitting is one of the most requested categories on HemmaPro, and one of the few you can start in without any prior business experience. Families look for sitters across Sweden, most densely in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö, and demand peaks on afternoons, evenings and school holiday weeks.

This guide covers exactly what is required, how to build a profile that attracts requests, and how to fill a stable calendar in your first few months.

Who can become a babysitter

You need to be at least 18, hold a Swedish personnummer or coordination number, and be able to communicate in Swedish or English. Formal education in pedagogy is not required, but some form of experience with children is in practice essential to win bookings.

Students on teaching, preschool teaching, nursing or social work programmes are especially sought after, as are people with experience from preschool, after-school care or coaching.

Background checks and safety

Childcare work requires an extract from the Swedish police criminal records register for work with children. Order it from Polisen well in advance, processing often takes a couple of weeks, and upload it to your profile.

Paediatric CPR is not a formal requirement, but it is the single strongest factor in a family choosing you over someone else. One-day courses are available in most cities.

Build a profile that gets requests

Use a clear, bright portrait photo where you look approachable. Write your introduction in both Swedish and English, many families in the big cities specifically want an English-speaking sitter.

Be specific about the ages you are confident with, for example 1–3, 4–6 or school age. Mention if you can help with homework, cook a simple dinner, do preschool pickups or handle pets, each of those details matches you to more requests.

Set the right availability

Your calendar determines your volume. Afternoons from 3 to 6 pm and Friday/Saturday evenings are the most requested slots. Listing those consistently brings in significantly more requests than being sporadically available.

During sportlov, Easter break and autumn half-term, daytime demand rises sharply. Open full days during those weeks if you can.

Invoicing and F-tax

For the family to use the RUT deduction, the work has to be invoiced through a company with F-tax registration. A sole trader (enskild firma) is free to register with Bolagsverket and Skatteverket and is the normal step for sitters taking bookings regularly.

If babysitting is a side income alongside studies, a sole trader setup works perfectly well, you are only taxed on what you actually earn.

Your first bookings

Reply fast. Families almost always choose from the first three responses. Write a personal reply that references the children's ages rather than pasting a template.

Offer a free 30-minute meet-and-greet. It dramatically raises your chance of being selected, and a family who has met you almost always books recurring sessions afterwards.

Aim for five completed bookings and five reviews as quickly as possible. After that, requests start arriving on their own.

How to earn top reviews

Arrive five minutes early. Clean up after dinner. Send a short message to the parents once the children are asleep. Leave the home exactly as you found it.

Those four things are what recur in five-star reviews, not advanced pedagogical technique.
