How to start and run a home service business in Sweden (2026)
From F-skatt and insurance to your first customer. A practical launch guide for electricians, painters, cleaners, carpenters and other service pros in Sweden.

Starting your own home service business in Sweden is easier than most people expect. The hard part is not the paperwork, it is filling the calendar during the first six months. This guide covers both.
We walk through company form, F-skatt, VAT, insurance, pricing and how to land your first paying customers without spending a krona on ads.
Choose your company form
Enskild firma (sole trader) is the most common starting point. It is free to register, quick to set up and fits anyone working alone. An aktiebolag requires 25,000 SEK in share capital but limits your liability and looks more professional to larger clients.
A common path is to start as a sole trader and switch to aktiebolag once turnover passes roughly 600,000 SEK per year.
F-skatt, VAT and bookkeeping
Apply for F-skatt with Skatteverket as part of registration. Without it you cannot invoice private customers correctly, and you cannot handle ROT or RUT deductions.
Register for VAT once turnover exceeds 120,000 SEK per year. Use simple accounting software from day one. Cleaning up a year of receipts afterwards costs more than three years of software.
Insurance and certification
Customers increasingly ask for proof of insurance before booking. Keep a PDF on your phone and you will win jobs while your competitor is still looking for theirs.
- Liability insurance: the minimum requirement for working inside a customer's home.
- Electricians: registration with Elsäkerhetsverket for the work you perform.
- Plumbers: Säker Vatten authorisation for wet rooms and tap water.
- Everyone: valid accident cover and documented self-inspection routines.
Landing your first customers
Your first channel should be free and local. Create a Google Business Profile, ask three former employers or private contacts for a review, and publish a complete profile on HemmaPro so homeowners in your city can find you from day one.
Add photos from every job. A profile with 15 sharp photos gets far more requests than one with two.
Calculate your cost per hour before setting a price
Take your target annual salary, add employer contributions, vehicle, tools, insurance, holidays and admin. Divide by billable hours, not working hours. The gap is usually 30 percent.
Read our pricing guide to set an hourly rate that actually survives a full year.
