Leak detection: cost, methods and what's included in 2026

Leak detection is specialist work. Price varies with method, how well-hidden the leak is, and whether your insurer requires documentation.

Here's the price picture, methods and when the cost can be reimbursed by home insurance.

Price picture 2026

Moisture measurement in wall/floor: 1,500–3,500 SEK. Thermal imaging: 2,500–5,500 SEK. Acoustic detection: 3,500–7,500 SEK. Combined methods: 5,000–12,000 SEK.

Extended investigation with opening walls/floors is billed separately by time, 700–1,100 SEK/hour.

Methods and when they fit

Thermal imaging: best for leaks in walls and ceilings where temperature differs. Fast and non-destructive.

Acoustic detection: leaks in pressurized pipes. Moisture measurement: moisture in structure, usually the first step. Tracer gas: hard cases where other methods failed.

What's normally included

  • On-site inspection with the right equipment.
  • Report with photos and conclusion (required for insurance).
  • Recommendation on remediation and time estimate.
  • OFTEN NOT INCLUDED: repair, opening walls/floors, restoration.

The insurance role

Home insurance usually covers the leak detection itself if damage has occurred or is suspected, but a deductible applies (1,500–5,000 SEK depending on insurer).

Villa insurance usually has higher coverage. Report the damage before leak detection starts, otherwise the insurer can refuse to reimburse.

How to prepare for the visit

Note where you've seen signs of moisture or unusual water bills. Photograph. Don't shut off the water if the leak is small, it's needed for the search.

Have blueprints or a floor plan available. On HemmaPro you can filter for plumbers who do leak detection, not all offer it.
