Here's when you really should call emergency, when it can wait until morning, and what to do yourself to limit the damage.
Call emergency if…
- Water is gushing and you can't shut it off via ballofix or the main valve.
- A drain is leaking across multiple floors (condo) and neighbours are affected.
- Toilet overflow with continuous flow you can't stop.
- Frozen pipes at risk of bursting (Norrland in winter).
- The water heater is leaking and you can't cut the power.
It can wait until morning if…
- The leak is small, water is shut off at the main and you have a bucket under.
- One drain is blocked but it's not the only drain in the home.
- A faucet drips but can be shut off locally.
- Dishwasher/washing machine leaks, cut the power, shut the water, book next-day.
Emergency rates 2026
Evening (5pm–10pm): 1,400–2,000 SEK/h. Night (10pm–7am): 1,800–2,500 SEK/h. Weekend and public holidays: 2,200–2,800 SEK/h.
Call-out fee 500–1,500 SEK on top. ROT applies to emergency work too, but only on labour hours.
How to limit damage while you wait
Shut the main valve. Place buckets under leaks and lay towels for splashes. Photograph the damage for insurance before you clean up.
If it's winter and pipes may freeze, warm the room, open the taps slightly so water keeps moving.
How to book emergency fast
Have address, problem description and photo ready. Ask for the emergency rate + call-out + minimum billing on the phone before they leave.
