Replacing a fuse box in 2026: cost, timeline and what's included

The fuse box is the heart of your home's electrical system. An old panel with plug fuses and no RCDs isn't just inconvenient, it also raises fire and shock risk.

When do you need to replace?

Your panel has no RCDs (only screw-in fuses): replacement is strongly recommended.

During a major renovation or extension, a new panel is usually needed to handle new load.

When installing an EV charger, heat pump or induction hob if the main fuse needs upgrading.

What does it cost in 2026?

Flat with a simple panel (5–8 circuits): 8,000–15,000 SEK after ROT.

Villa (12–18 circuits with RCD per circuit): 18,000–35,000 SEK after ROT.

Villa with a simultaneous upgrade to 3-phase 25 A: 30,000–55,000 SEK after ROT.

What's included?

New panel (Hager, Eaton, ABB): 2,500–8,000 SEK depending on size. MCBs and RCDs per circuit: 200–500 SEK each. Labour: 8–20 hours depending on rewiring.

Main fuse change (from the grid owner, e.g. Ellevio or E.ON): 3,000–8,000 SEK, not ROT-eligible but sometimes required.

Timeline

The swap itself takes 1 working day (8–10 hours) for a normal villa. Power is off in the entire house during that time. Fridges and freezers cope but laptops and routers go dark.

From order to completed job: 2–6 weeks depending on panel lead time and the electrician's schedule.

ROT deduction

Fuse box replacement is ROT-eligible. 30% of labour, capped at 50,000 SEK per person per year. Insist on an itemised invoice separating labour from materials.
