Winterizing your pool: a checklist for the Swedish climate

Frost damage to pool equipment is the most expensive and most avoidable pool cost in Sweden. A cracked pump or frozen pipe costs 8,000 to 25,000 SEK to fix, and the cause is almost always closing too late or too casually.

This checklist is written for the Swedish climate, from Skåne to central Sweden.

When to close the pool

Wait until the water temperature stays below twelve degrees, usually October in southern Sweden and late September further north. Closing too early in warm water breeds algae under the cover.

But do not wait for the first frost. The equipment must be drained before temperatures drop below zero.

Step by step

Follow this order; it takes half a day for a normal domestic pool.

• Clean thoroughly, brush walls and floor, and backwash the filter
• Adjust pH to 7.2 and shock chlorinate, then run the filter for 24 hours
• Lower the water to just below the skimmer, no further
• Fully drain the pump, filter, heat pump and all pipework
• Plug the inlets and skimmer and add frost protection cushions
• Fit the winter cover and strap it down properly

Common mistakes

Draining the pool completely is one of the costliest errors. An empty liner pool can be lifted by groundwater pressure and a concrete pool can crack. The water stays, just lowered.

The second common mistake is forgetting the heat pump. Even small amounts of water left in the heat exchanger will split it at the first real freeze.

Cost of professional closing

A pool company typically charges 3,000 to 6,000 SEK for a complete winterization including chemicals and an equipment check.

That is roughly a tenth of what frost damage costs, and most firms document the work with photos so you know the condition everything was left in.
