Solar panels in Malmö 2026: cost, payback and the green deduction

Malmö has some of Sweden's best conditions for solar power, the combination of many sun hours (just over 1,900 per year) and a relatively mild climate means a solar system here produces 10–15 % more per installed kW than in central Sweden. Yet many villa owners hesitate because the investment feels large and the regulations hard to grasp.

This guide covers what a solar package in Malmö realistically costs in 2026, how the green deduction affects the price, what you get paid for your production, and when the system pays for itself.

What does solar cost in Malmö?

For a normal Malmö villa with 30–50 m² of suitable roof area, the total price in 2026 is:

5 kW system (12–14 panels): SEK 80,000–110,000 after the green deduction. Suits smaller villas or apartments with shared metering. Produces around 4,500–5,500 kWh/year.

10 kW system (24–28 panels): SEK 140,000–190,000 after the green deduction. Most common for a normal-sized villa. Produces 9,000–11,000 kWh/year.

15 kW system (36–42 panels): SEK 190,000–260,000 after the green deduction. Requires a large roof, suits larger villas with EV and heat pump. Produces 13,500–16,000 kWh/year.

Battery storage is optional, a 10 kWh battery costs an extra SEK 60,000–90,000 and usually pays off only if you have an EV or want partial self-sufficiency during outages.

The green deduction: how much you save

Since 2023, there is a green tax deduction of 20 % on the solar installation itself, plus 50 % on battery storage and 50 % on EV chargers. The deduction is applied directly to the invoice by the installer, you do not need to apply afterwards.

Practical example: a 10 kW system with a list price of SEK 180,000 becomes SEK 144,000 after the green deduction. Add a battery listed at SEK 100,000, which after the 50 % deduction becomes SEK 50,000.
