Heat pump service: what it costs and how often it is needed

Service intervals and 2026 Swedish prices for air-to-air, air-to-water and ground source heat pumps, common faults, and the effect on your bill.

Heat pump service: what it costs and how often it is needed

The heat pump is the most expensive piece of technology in most Swedish houses, and the one most often forgotten until it stops working, usually on a cold February evening.

Regular service costs little and pays for itself in both a lower electricity bill and a longer service life.

Service intervals by type

Air-to-air heat pumps need filter cleaning every three months, which you do yourself, plus professional service every second year. Air-to-water and ground source systems should be checked annually.

Systems with more than three kilos of refrigerant are also subject to a legal annual leak inspection, which applies to some larger ground source installations.

What service costs

The prices below apply in Sweden in 2026, including VAT and before the ROT deduction on labour.

  • Air-to-air service, cleaning and function check: 1,500 to 2,800 SEK
  • Air-to-water service: 2,500 to 4,500 SEK
  • Ground source service: 3,000 to 5,500 SEK
  • Refrigerant top-up: 2,000 to 6,000 SEK depending on quantity
  • Circulation pump replacement: 4,000 to 8,000 SEK

What service does for your bill

A blocked outdoor unit or dirty filter cuts efficiency by ten to twenty percent. In a house heated for 25,000 SEK a year, that is 2,500 to 5,000 SEK wasted.

Service usually costs less than a single year of lost efficiency, and the technician spots developing faults before they become emergencies.

Signs something is wrong

Ice on the outdoor unit that does not defrost, a compressor cycling on and off frequently, noticeably increased noise, or indoor temperature no longer being reached despite the pump running flat out.

With any of these, book a technician immediately. A pump running low on refrigerant wears fast, and compressor failure costs 20,000 SEK or more.
