How to budget for a bathroom renovation in Sweden

From ROT deduction to choosing materials, everything you need to know before starting your bathroom renovation.

How to budget for a bathroom renovation in Sweden

Bathroom renovations in Sweden typically cost 80,000–250,000 SEK depending on size, materials and scope. Getting the budget right is the difference between a great project and an unpleasant surprise.

What's actually included in the cost?

Labour makes up 50–60% of the total: demolition, plumbing, electrical, tiling, grouting and painting. Materials, tile, sanitary porcelain, taps, vanities, make up the rest.

Don't forget waterproofing membrane and planning permission (if load-bearing walls are touched). The membrane is invisible but critical; a poorly installed one leads to moisture damage that costs hundreds of thousands to fix.

The ROT deduction, how it works

ROT reduces labour cost by 30%, capped at 50,000 SEK per person per year. Two owners of the same home can therefore claim 100,000 SEK in deductions.

It applies only to labour, not materials. The home must be at least five years old and you must own it.

Three tiers of bathroom renovation

Budget (80,000–130,000 SEK): standard tile, IKEA vanities, basic taps. Functional and fresh.

Mid (130,000–200,000 SEK): designer tile, semi-commercial taps, underfloor heating, integrated storage.

Premium (200,000–400,000 SEK+): natural stone, custom vanities, walk-in shower, smart home integration.

Common pitfalls

Not asking for a fixed price. Hourly billing can blow the budget, always request a fixed-price quote with a clear specification.

Choosing materials first and trades last. Good trades are often booked 2–3 months out, start there.

Forgetting the small items: towel rails, hooks, mirror lighting, ventilation. Add a 10% buffer.

How to find the right plumber and tiler
